The toy was based off the popular 90s toy, Tamagotchi, which was mainly taken up by girls, so they decided to launch Digimon as a version for boys.

Digimon comes from the terms digital and monster being combined, this is due to the toys being virtual or digital monsters that the owner cared for and trained for them to digivolve into a more powerful battle monster.
The TV series, Digimon Adventures, followed seven kid trainers Matt, Tai, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe and T.K. (Takeru) as they befriended, collected, cared for, trained and battled their various digimon. They are later joined by Kari and along with the other seven, are known as the Digidestined.
All of the bad guys in the TV series were types of digimon that sought to destroy the Digidestined.
This series from Japan was different as it didn't change the Japan locations mentioned to America or European places like many other series that were changed and shown in English speaking countries.
